Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Coaching
Overview
The BSc (Hons) in Sports Coaching provides students (aspiring coaches) with advanced coaching techniques, styles, and education through a variety of sports (e.g. team, individual, outdoor pursuit), including inclusivity and disabilities. This multidisciplinary programme will ensure students learn effective coaching techniques and have a scientific understanding of anatomy, physiology, sport psychology, fundamentals of movement, talent development, and the ability to analyse and critique technique. All these skills will be learnt through a variety of different coaching environments.
The applied coaching placements proposed throughout the degree, are a unique feature of this course, they will provide students with an opportunity to develop both personally and professionally and provide novice coaches with exposure to applied coaching practice from the start of the course.
An additional unique benefit of the course is that students can complete a number of coaching accreditation courses from National Governing Bodies (NGB), such as the foundation level for GAA through the GAA, ‘Kick Start 1’ through the FAI, Female students will be encouraged to join ‘Women’s Student Coaching Academy’. Students from this programme will be eligible to apply for Masters in Physical Education (PE) for teaching at post-primary level, as well as a range of other sports related Masters.
A coach’s role is the help athletes, players, and individuals reach their training potential, through fitness, skills, tactics, and psychological readiness. Sport coaches also are known for their ability to mentor, guide, advice, and support their athletes not only within sport but skills for life. This course will provide students with the opportunity to learn, broaden, and progress these skills from theory to practice throughout this degree.

Practical
This course is ideally suited to individuals that are passionate about playing or coaching sport or want a career in the sporting or fitness industry. It is a practically applied coaching degree, with a variety of sporting opportunities, populations, and environments where students will put theory into practice
Teaching Council
This course will provide students with the required theory and practical knowledge to meet the Teaching Council requirements for application to postgraduate programmes in Physical Education (PE).
