Stephen Walsh Memorial Scholarship for Engineering

Open for 2024-2025

Stephen Walsh from Westport, Co. Mayo was a Construction Management student at our Galway campus. He was very popular amongst his classmates and was a dedicated class representative enjoying college life and (as he would say himself) “living the dream”. In March 2022, Stephen was on work placement on a construction site when he died suddenly.

This scholarship is offered in memory of Stephen.

The Stephen Walsh Memorial Scholarship  is specifically available for students accepting a course in our School of Engineering in Galway.

The scholarship of €5,000 is to support a student entering an engineering programme in ATU Galway who is from a socio-economically or other disadvantaged background, or who has faced difficult personal circumstances.

This financial scholarship is provided in increments over the duration of the programme of study.

Note: Applicants must have taken the Leaving Certificate exams within the last two years.

A candidate must satisfy the following conditions:

1.    Be a new entrant to higher education.

2.    Be a citizen of an EU/EEA member state, Switzerland, or the UK.

3.    Have taken the Leaving Certificate exams within the last two years.

4.    Be a current applicant for any ATU Galway Engineering programme through the CAO and satisfy the general and specific criteria for entry.

5.    Have family income under the current threshold for the third-level maintenance grant scheme.

Criteria for Selection

1.    Compliance with conditions specified at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 above.

2.    An academic reference is required as part of the assessment process. Applicants should request an academic reference from their school.

Nominated candidates may be short-listed. Those short-listed may be interviewed in August, following Leaving Certificate results and CAO first round offers.
