Physics Student Work Placements

Physics and Instrumentation Students

In Semester two of year three, GMIT Physics and Instrumentation students must complete a minimum nine week work placement, commencing at the end of March.

Schedule:

The placement usually runs from the end of March to end of May, during this time the students will be based in the Company/Research Institute full time.

All the course material will be finished and the students will have completed their final B.Sc. (Ord) exams before the project placement begins. Therefore, extension of the placement to cover the summer period is also an option, resulting in a five to six month placement.

Nature of the Placement:

Students typically get placements in Instrumentation/Engineering/Technical/Quality roles in a wide variety of companies.

Our course in delivered as 50% theory and 50% laboratory work, therefore our students are both theoretically and practically competent.

Subject Matter:

Subject material for projects could include topics related to Physics & Instrumentation including (but not limited to):

  • Calibration

  • Control Systems

  • Digital Systems & Interfacing

  • Electronic Instrumentation

  • Instrument Design

  • Mathematics & Computational Methods

  • Non-Destructive Testing and Physics Theory 

Terms and Conditions:

Payment/benefits for the students are not a requirement and are at the discretion of the host Company/Institute.

All students will be covered by GMIT's insurance policy while on placement.
