Certificate in Recovery in Mental Health

The Certificate in Recovery in Mental Health is a 10-credit module which enables learners to develop an in-depth working knowledge of the principles and practice of recovery for the mental health service user and to critically evaluate the range of skills necessary to work innovatively and collaboratively with the service users, carers and their families and appropriate agencies.

This is a stand alone module. Throughout this module the following areas will be explored and discussed. 

1. Understand recovery principles and experiences in the national and international context.

2. Effectively engage and work in partnership with service users, carers and their families in assessment, delivery and evaluation of care within a recovery model. 

3. Recognise and support personal resourcefulness and empowerment of service users.

4. Critically evaluate and reflect on the extent to which the learner's own practice is underpinned by knowledge of theory and relevant recovery research in delivering effective care within the context of a recovery approach. 

5.Contribute to effective change and the development of effective local policy in mental health care delivery. 

6.Contribute to the promotion of the recovery model in mental health practice

7.Understand the importance of promoting social inclusion and reducing stigma in recovery work. 

8.Understand the need for user and self advocacy in implementing the recovery approach and understand the importance of actively protecting service user rights. 

9.Have a comprehensive knowledge of community services and resources and actively support service users in using them. 

10.Have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the range of mental health problems experienced by service users, carers and their families with regard to recovery. 

Entry Requirements

This module is for people who have a lived experience of emotional or physical distress and for family members who may have been affected by a loved ones mental distress. 

This module is also for professionals who wish to underpin and strengthen existing knowledge and gain new knowledge in relation to recovery in mental health.

Applicants should hold a Level 7 major award. For applicants without the specified Level 7 qualification, the ATU RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process may be used to determine admission to the programme.

Programme Delivery

3 hours each week for one semester. 

The module can be accessed fully online or fully on-campus, or a combination if it suits the student. 

Classes are recorded and can be viewed at a time convenient to the student.
