Schools Activities

ATU runs a number of activities and events for schools throughout the year.

1. ATU Civic Engagement Student Places 

ATU run a module titled 'Civic Engagement' with second, third and fourth year students from a range of disciplines.

The module involves 36 hours community placement with a non-profit organisation or charity group.

Popular placement activities with schools include:

• Taster programmes

• Home work clubs

• Mentoring

• School guidebook developments

• Study skills support

2. Secondary schools engineering workshops

ATU School of Engineering run a series of workshops with secondary schools students in Galway.

The workshops take place in the Building and Civil Department provided students with an insight into the learning experiences in civil engineering, construction management, quantity surveying and architectural technology, helping students make the right CAO choices.

ATU run building and civil engineering workshops each Wednesday for secondary schools.

3. CanSat AT GMIT

CanSat is a national competition for 2nd Level students (transition year and upwards), run by ESERO Ireland in association with GMIT and other Institutes of Technology around the country.

The competition involves teams of 2nd Level school students competing to design, build and test a CanSat - a simulation of a real satellite, built inside an empty soft drinks can.

They are trained and supported throughout the process by GMIT staff and a number of corporate mentors.

This initiative offers secondary school students a unique opportunity to get practical experience of a real space project, as they have to:

• Design, build and test the CanSat

• Select its mission

• Prepare the CanSat for launch

• Analyse the data

4. SCIFEST at GMIT

Every Spring, GMIT showcases 70-80 science project exhibits from secondary schools in Galway Mayo and Roscommon as part of Scifest.

The aim of the SciFest project is to encourage a love of science through active, collaborative, inquiry-based learning and to provide a forum for students at local, regional and national level to present and display their scientific investigations.

5. Peer assisted study sessions(pass) leader certificate

PASS is a mentoring scheme in GMIT that offers cross-year support between students on the same programme.

It encourages first year students to support each other and learn co-operatively under the guidance of a trained student (a PASS Leader) from the second, third, or fourth years of their programme. 

Each year we offer a limited number of places to secondary school students to take part.  

This provides a fantastic opportunity to gain new skills and help set up a Peer Mentoring Programme in your own secondary school.

The leadership training programme takes place over two days and benefits include:

• Development of personal and professional skills such as leadership, time management, active listening, interpersonal communication, mentoring, facilitation, and presenting

• Increasing students confidence

6. Mapping further education college courses with GMIT degree programmes

GMIT welcomes applications from holders of a FETAC Level 6 Award.

We invite all Further Education Colleges in Ireland to complete this FE College Mapping Form to help us link your courses with a GMIT Degree Programme.
