Applied Ecological Modelling

Description

Students will learn how to develop and construct conceptual and statistical models using a variety of tools, and apply modelling skills to the analysis of natural resource systems. The models developed and tools utilised have particular application to the biological and ecological assessment of fisheries, wildlife, and ecosystems, and the management of human use of these resources. The course provides an opportunity to learn transferable skills such as R coding, which are becoming a standard requirement in industry and academic research.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate fundamental understanding of statistical inference.

  2. Construct conceptual, mathematical and statistical models to describe and infer population and system dynamics.

  3. Apply models to predict outcomes under given scenarios, and to evaluate risks and uncertainties.
