Architectural Technologies and Services 1

This module outlines the theoretical and practical requirements for the construction of a dwelling house. The module is delivered in two overarching sections: 1. Architectural Technology, and 2. Services. On completion of this module, a student will have a good understanding of architectural technology details for domestic construction, such as timber frame construction, foundation design, site investigations, site set-up, cavity wall construction, window and door design and detailing, timber and hollowcore first floor detailing, flat and pitched roof detail design, as well as scheduling domestic construction including window and door schedules, stairs General Arrangements and detailing, and first floor General Arrangements and detailing. Building regulation requirements pertaining to dwelling houses will be outlined in terms of the requirements for 1. Architectural Technology, and for 2. Services content is largely related to dwellings. It includes Water Services (Potable, cold & hot) and Waste Water disposal. Space heating is also covered. Electrical theory, safety and basic lighting and power installations are included.

1. Demonstrate an awareness of the technical design principles, techniques, site preparation, and methods of construction relating to the architectural technology of a dwelling house.

2. Apply, under direction, current technologies and processes to non-complex building design and construction from the ground to roof inclusive.

3. Produce, under direction, appropriate project documentation, use basic building performance design tools, and produce non-complex calculations, through project-based learning and technical detail design.

4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the importance of statutory and regulatory requirements pertaining to building and buildings, applied through project-based learning and technical detail design.

5. Demonstrate a comprehension of the essential elements of the design process and methodologies for domestic water, waste water, LPHW space heating and electrical services for a domestic building

6. Complete a basic layout for the water, waste water, LPHW space heating and electrical services for a domestic building.
