Cell Biology/Genetics

Description

This module introduces the students to the key questions of cell biology and genetics including the structure of cells, organelles, cellular arrangement and intracellular activities, DNA, RNA and protein. The module also includes an introduction to microbiology.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the structure and functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells

  2. Identify and describe structures and functions of cell organelles

  3. Recognise and describe the structure and function of the major biomolecules

  4. Explain basic genetic concepts and the control mechanisms regulating gene expression

  5. Describe the structure, physiology and replication of microorganisms

  6. Identify and measure various cells using the light microscope

  7. Work in a safe manner in the laboratory, perform laboratory practicals and present the findings
