Fundamental Nursing Knowledge and Skills

Description

This is a foundation module in Nursing Practice and it will welcome first year general nursing students into the profession. The module will focus on fundamental nursing knowledge and skills in a person-centred and sustainable health care context. The learner will build core competencies in nursing practice to enable safe, evidence-based, nursing care and management and will begin to learn to demonstrate nursing values of care, compassion and kindness (NMBI 2016, 2021) in doing so. 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss best practice in infection control and wound healing in a sustainable hospital setting.

  2. Demonstrate accurate recording of Early Warning Score system in an acute care setting.

  3. Outline pre and post operative patient care.

  4. Identify hydration and nutrition needs of patients in a hospital setting.

  5. Explain safe medication management in a sustainable health care setting. 

  6. Describe nursing care and management of a dying patient.

  7. Detail current nursing practice in relation to elimination.

  8. Discuss sleep and rest nursing care. 

  9. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in personal hygiene patient needs.

  10. Illustrate care and management of respiration needs.
