Golden Jubilee Projects

Projects to mark fifty years of technological higher education

Our projects are centred around five programme strands:

  • Ceremonial
  • Public History & Heritage
  • Cultural & Technological Innovation
  • Alumni & Community Engagement
  • Sustainable Futures

Golden Jubilee Logo

In 2021, a competition was run by the Centre for Creative Arts & Media for the design of a special logo to mark our Golden Jubilee anniversary. The winning entry was submitted by art student Svana Dís Hafsteinsdóttir. The zero in her logo was cut in half to represent the sun over GMIT, 'setting behind us to represent the past and rising before us to reveal a new beginning'.

New Memorial to Deceased Staff and Students

A new memorial to deceased staff and students is planned as part of the construction of the new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) building.

Celebrating Fifty Years of Technological Higher Education in the West of Ireland, 1972–2022

This exhibition will outline the evolution of technological higher education in the west of Ireland, from 1972–2022. It will cover the establishment of Regional Technical College (RTC), Galway in 1972, its renaming as Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) in 1998, and the creation of Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in 2022. In addition to storyboards covering historical milestones and educational achievements over the course of fifty years, the accompanying display cases will contain presentations of archival and artefactual heritages.

Oral History Project

An inclusive oral history of the college will be compiled, with a thematic focus on the recollections of current and retired personnel, including: Presidents; Registrars; Senior Staff; Lecturers; Librarians; Administrators; Technicians; Caterers; Cleaners; Sports & Recreation Officers; Student Services Personnel; and Students Union Officers. It is envisaged that a range of external stakeholders will also be interviewed as part of this project.

Artworks

A piece of original commemorative artwork will be specially commissioned for the Galway campus, with smaller replicas produced for the other campuses. Our Denis Murphy Collection will be curated and publicly exhibited, with one piece of artwork to be sent to each campus afterwards. A mobile exhibition of artworks on loan from the Arts Council is also planned.

Alumni Registration & Linking Application

An Alumni Registration & Linking Application (ARLA) will be produced by fourth year computing students.

50 Faces in 50 Years

This will showcase a variety of profiles associated with our college, focusing on: graduates across a blend of disciplines and genders; community contributors (friends of our college, who support and help our work across campuses); and staff who are graduates of our college. A selection of profiles will be published in local newspapers, such as the Galway Advertiser and Mayo Advertiser.

Impact

This initiative will showcase how our college has made an impact locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. We will create a series of stories from students/graduates who have completed work placement in the region and beyond. We will also highlight examples of projects that connect us to other continents, such as Africa. A video will be also made, thus serving as a permanent reminder of the human stories behind our impacts.

Green Spaces and Biodiversity Trial

A biodiversity trail will be created at the Galway campus. This sustainability initiative will include: signing up to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan (AIPP); the purchase of general gardening equipment and a storage unit; the erection of signage; and the installation of pollinator-friendly areas.

Student Engagement and Supports

A Student Sustainability/Green Ambassador initiative will be established, whereby students will support the work of the Centre for Sustainability through projects and activities.
