Mathematics/Statistics

Description

This module includes mathematics, statistics and computing skills.

Mathematics: This involves solving various types of equations, plotting and using functions such as log and exponential functions, basic differentiation and its application to rate of change and optimisation problems.

Statistics : This includes the evaluation of the basic descriptive statistics, using the probability laws and the binomial and Poisson distribution to evaluate probabilities.

Computing: The use of Excel as a calculating tool and for plotting mathematical functions, evaluating descriptive statistics and for graphical presentation of data.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Solve linear, quadratic and linear and non- linear simultaneous equations.

  2. Solve common log, natural log, exponential and indicial equations.

  3.  Plot graphs of algebraic functions manually and using Excel

  4. Show that paired values of variables are connected by linear , non-linear, exponential and log laws and find the parameters of these laws by graph and regression mode on the calculator.

  5. Use differentiation to solve ‘rate of change' and optimisation problems.

  6. Differentiate some standard functions.

  7. Evaluate descriptive statistics for sample data.

  8. Summarise raw data in bar charts, histograms and boxplots using Excel and MINITAB.

  9. Use the statistics mode on the calculator for statistical calculations for ordinary and grouped data.

  10. Solve probability problems using the basic probability laws.

  11. Be able to apply the Binomial and Poisson probability distributions appropriately in solving statistical problems.
