Description

This module aims to facilitate Mental Health Nursing students to develop the skills and knowledge required to contribute and participate fully in recovery-orientated mental health service provision, clear in their understanding of their identity and the values inherent in Mental Health Nursing practice.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically analyse the challenge of caring for people with complex needs and identify how best to support people them and their families.

  2. Critically evaluate power imbalances between professionals and people with mental health difficulties.

  3. Demonstrate in depth knowledge about trauma, trauma recovery, trauma informed services and care and the current policy imperative and evidence basis for this. 

  4. Comprehensively articulate the importance of medication safety and effectiveness for the mental health service user with reference to key legislative, professional and clinical guidance.

  5. Clearly identify and articulate indicators of abuse in different client groups and the appropriate referral pathways to address same. 

  6. With reference to contemporary health and social issues, critically analyse and articulate the impact of homelessness on the mental health and wellbeing of at risk groups within our community.  

  7. Develop a comprehensive recovery orientated care plan which addresses the priority care needs of a service user using a systematic approach to care. 

  8.  Critically analyse how a Mental Health Nurse can promote a safe working environment to enhance service user care.
