Business School hosts public debate on Seanad referendum

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) is hosting a public debate on the Seanad Referendum in the Dublin Road (Galway) campus on Monday, 30 September, 11.30am (Rm 994).

On the YES side, advocating the abolition of the Seanad, will be Senators Hildegarde Naughton (Fine Gael) and Trevor O'Clochartaigh (Sinn Féin). On the No side will be Deputy Eamon O’Cúiv (Fianna Fáil) and Senator Fidelma Healy Eames (Fine Gael). The chairman of the event will be GMIT Business lecturer Paidi O'Lionaird.

The debate, organised by the GMIT School of Business, will commence at 11.30am with each speaker given six minutes to argue the case against or for the abolition of the Seanad, followed by a Q&A from the Chairman and GMIT students, and closing with one minute for each of the four speakers. A vote will take place and the results announced at approximately 12.30pm.

Deirdre Lusby, Head of Dept, School of Business, says it’s a great opportunity for GMIT students to engage with politicians in the run up to the referendum.

“The event is also a learning experience for students as they will be involved in hosting the event. Members of the public are also welcome to attend.”
