GMIT Castlebar to host national final of IT Factor Song Contest
Musically talented students from Institutes of Technology around the country are to gather in Castlebar next Tuesday, 6 March, for the national finals of the popular IT Factor Song Contest.
Hosted this year by GMIT Castlebar, the finals take place in the Royal Theatre opposite the GMIT campus (Westport Road), Castlebar, from 8pm. Local heats are currently taking place in each of the Institutes in two categories, Original Song and Cover Song. Each IT will send two acts, one in each category, to compete in the national final.
GMIT Castlebar will be represented in the cover song section by Con Murphy from Ballinrobe who is studying Applied Social Studies and Emmet Sugrue from Kerry who is studying Outdoor Education. They will perform a duet of hits “Jigsaw” and “Ready for the Weekend”. Con will also compete in the original category with his own composition “Messed up Date”.
GMIT Castlebar Chaplain Daniel Caldwell says it promises to be a great night’s entertainment. “This event is one of the highlights of the student calendar. The Students Union, Student Services and Chaplaincy service in GMIT Castlebar have been working together to ensure it will be a night to remember.”
“We’re looking forward to discovering great new talent and we hope members of the public will join us on the night - tickets are only €3. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the TF for giving us the venue for the evening.”
The event will be attended by busloads of students from Institutes of Technology across the country. Dublin band TKO will perform the interval act and Liam Byrne (Christy Moore tribute act) will perform after the show in the Cafe Bar in the TF/Royal Theatre.
GMIT Galway won the IT Factor Song Contest last year (2011); Engineering student Myles Kelly from Ballintubber won the Cover category in the national competition.
