GMIT Forum focuses on training needs of Adventure Tourism sector

GMIT College of Tourism & Arts in partnership with Fáilte Ireland held a one-day Adventure Tourism Forum in the Galway campus (Dublin Road) this week, Thursday 23 April.

Over 30 tourism operators offering outdoor adventure activities along the Wild Atlantic Way were in attendance, along with management and academics involved in tourism programmes from all of the Institutes of Technologies along the WAW (from Letterkenny to Cork IT). 

The forum looked at the local training needs of the industry and how the ITs can meet these needs through flexible methods of delivery such as part-time and 'block' training. It also examined the latest worldwide trends in adventure tourism with talks from international and Irish speakers including travel writer Cathy Mac and Maura Lyons, Programme Manager of ‘Leave No Trace Ireland, a partner driven organisation that teaches people of all ages how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly.

The GMIT event was co-ordinated by Maria Murphy, lecturer in the GMIT College of Tourism & Arts.
