GMIT Mayo hosts two open events on third-level study and GMIT courses
Thursday 14 November (7-9pm) and Friday 15 November (10am-1pm)
GMIT Mayo is opening its doors to the public on Thursday 14 November for a Parent Information Evening (7 – 9pm) and Friday 15 November (10am – 1pm) for an Open Morning for secondary school students, as well as parents and anyone interested in starting or returning to third-level study as a mature student.
The evening event on Thursday is for parents and advisors of Leaving Certificate students and anyone wishing to find out more about third-level education in general. Expert advice will be available on areas such as financial assistance, grants, SUSI, supports for students in areas such as health, wellbeing, safety and special needs, progression routes in third-level education and the transition from second to third-level education.
“This information evening is open to all, irrespective of whether you or your child is planning to apply for a programme at the Mayo campus,” says Anne Donnelly, Student Services Officer.
“We hope that this event will help allay any concerns or worries parents may have about the Irish third-level education system. In addition to providing general information on all areas relating to third-level education, lecturers will also be available at the event to about specific GMIT programmes.”
The Open Morning on Friday 15 November is designed for second-level students and their career teachers as well as parents and anyone wishing to return to college as a mature student.
Visitors will have an opportunity to take part in workshops on the various disciplines on offer in the campus in Castlebar. There will also be stands providing information on all programmes from Higher Certificate to honours degree level in Business, Computing & ICT, Humanities, Outdoor Education, Nursing & Social Studies and Engineering. Staff and students will be on hand to talk about the many services available to support students during their time at third level.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to view the beautiful interior of the GMIT campus, formerly St Mary’s hospital, which has been restored and refurbished in recent years into a state of the art learning centre with excellent facilities.
Senior lecturers and heads of the GMIT Department of Business, Humanities, Technology and Outdoor Education, and the GMIT Department of Nursing & Social Studies will be available to meet with parents and students to discuss any issues including the CAO process, student finance, and student supports. A representative from GMIT’s school liaison team will also be available to talk about a range of issues including programmes offered in GMIT’s other campuses in Galway.
