Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is holding three separate Open Information events in January, the first in Castlebar on Thursday 10 January, 7 to 9pm, the second in Galway on Saturday 19 January, 11am, and the third in Letterfrack on Friday 25 January, 1pm.

Leaving Certificate students, mature applicants, parents and advisors are invited to attend any or all of these events where information will be available on the range of full-time CAO programmes on offer in all GMIT campuses, as well as on part-time accredited and non-accredited courses delivered in GMIT’s two Lifelong Learning Centres, at Galway and Castlebar.

GMIT staff and students will be available to talk to prospective students about the CAO process and how to apply, and about all aspects of GMIT student life.

At GMIT Castlebar’s Open Evening on 10 January, information will be available on all programmes in Business, Computing, Heritage, Construction, Nursing, Outdoor Education and Applied Social Studies. Of special interest are two new degree offerings - the new and innovative CAO-listed the Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Digital Media and Society which commences in September 2013; and the new Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sustainable Building Technology, a one year add-on honours degree programme (NQAI level 8) which commenced this year for the first time in the Castlebar campus.

In Castlebar, a number of part-time accredited programmes are available in the areas of Nursing, Business and Computing, commencing January 2013. Other part time non-accredited evening courses are available in counselling, creative writing, languages, photography, wildlife and conflict management.

The Galway campus Open Information day on Saturday 19 January commences at 11am and will have general information on all programmes in all campuses with staff on hand to answer queries and address any concerns people may have about completing CAO applications.

GMIT’s two Galway campuses offer a broad range of programmes in the disciplines of Business, Engineering, Tourism & Arts and the Sciences.

GMIT Letterfrack this year celebrates its 25th anniversary and has been re-designated the National Centre for Excellence in Furniture Design & Technology. The campus is a leading provider of degree programmes related to the furniture industry and post-primary teacher training in technology based subjects. Its Open Day on Friday 25 January 2013 will include a tour and presentation, commencing 1pm.

The Letterfrack information session will begin with a presentation on all programmes delivered in the campus. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk to staff and students and learn about all aspects of student life on campus. A tour of the facilities will take in the state of the art machine halls where demonstrations will be given on laser machines, CNC technology, robotics and more.

GMIT Registrar Michael Hannon says these open events in January are for all members of the public including Leaving Certificate students and mature students who would like to see GMIT facilities at first hand and learn all about GMIT programmes from staff.

“GMIT is unique in that we are multi-campus, offering a wide range of programmes in a multiplicity of disciplines. We will run more open days in March for Leaving Certificate students, in response to the recent reduction in hours allocated to secondary schools careers teachers.”

“GMIT is happy to facilitate individual visits or group tours which can be arranged through our Schools Liaison Office. Email: slo@gmit.ie or call 091 742423,” adds Mr Hannon.
