Hundreds of second-level pupils to attend GMIT Mayo Open Day
Large crowds of second level pupils and careers teachers from schools in Mayo and surrounding counties are expected to attend GMIT Mayo’s Open Day next month, Friday 14 November (10am-1pm).
The event, which is also open to mature students, parents and the general public, is an opportunity to explore the college and campus facilities in Castlebar and talk to students and academic staff about the variety of programmes on offer. There will be information stands on all programmes from Higher Certificate to honours degree level in Business, Computing & ICT, Humanities, Outdoor Education, Nursing & Social Studies and Construction.
A representative from GMIT Letterfrack campus will also be available to advise on the Furniture Design, Technology, Manufacturing and Teacher training programmes on offer in the Connemara campus.
Anne Donnelly, GMIT Mayo Student Services Officer, says: “A special feature this year is the range of workshops on the various disciplines on offer in the campus such as Digital Media and Outdoor Education. There will also be a representative from SUSI on campus to answer any queries attendees may have about grants and or college finance.”
“The Open Day is also a great opportunity for visitors to view the beautiful interior of the GMIT campus which was formerly St Mary’s hospital. The building has been restored and refurbished in recent years into a state of the art learning centre with excellent facilities.”
Senior lecturers and heads of the GMIT Department of Business, Humanities, Technology and Outdoor Education, and the GMIT Department of Nursing & Social Studies will be available to meet with parents and students to discuss any issues including the CAO process, student finance, and student supports.
A representative from GMIT’s school liaison team will also be available to talk about a range of issues including programmes offered in GMITs other campuses in Galway.
A special workshop on Mindfulness, for Career Guidance Counsellors and teachers, will explore a range of mindfulness techniques that teachers can implement in the classroom with their students. There will also be a networking buffet brunch for career guidance counsellors and teachers which will be hosted by the Head of Campus, Dr Deirdre Garvey.
