Hundres of Mayo pupils to attend GMIT 'Jobs of the Future' event

Hundreds of secondary school pupils from Mayo are to attend a unique event in the GMIT Mayo campus on Thursday 19th September called ‘Jobs of the Future Open Day’.

It is the first such event for secondary students to take place in the Mayo campus, and is aimed at informing them and their teachers about trends and career options across various sectors.

Talks will be given by representatives from a range of ‘growth’ areas such as ICT (software and hardware, mobile internet, cloud storage); Creative industries (animation, gaming, app and website development); and Science & Engineering (nanotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical devices, healthcare, food technologies, etc.).

Some 17 speakers will explain what it is really like to work in various sectors and how to go about starting a career in the relevant area. Among the speakers are Fabiola Stein from Dell who will talk about Digital Media and eCommerce, David Quinn from Avenir Design who will focus on Graphic Design, Jerh O’Connor of IBM who will focus on Programming, Maricka Burke Keogh from IMS Marketing who will speak about Digital Marketing, Sean Gilbride from the Food Technology Centre who will talk about Food Technologies, and many others.

The event is organised by GMIT in partnership with GMIT’s Innovation in Business Centre and Mayo Education Centre, both of which are located on campus. The talks will take place over three separate sessions – 10am to 11.30am, 11.45am to 1pm and 2pm to 3pm.

Ivana Neary, GMIT Mayo campus, Schools Promotion Officer, says it’s an excellent opportunity for secondary school pupils and their teachers or career guidance counsellors to update themselves on career trends.

“Pupils attending the event will be able to make more informed career choices. Members of the public are also welcome to attend this ‘Jobs of the Future Open Day.’
