MedScience graduates return to GMIT to share their career experiences

A number of graduates of the Medical Science course in GMIT returned to the Galway campus last week (7 November) to share their career experiences with current students on the BSc (Hons) degree programme.

Hosted by the Department of Life & Physical Sciences in the Galway campus, the graduates were joined by John O'Sullivan, Managing Director of Biomnis, a leading independent provider of medical laboratory testing services in Ireland, who spoke about trends and developments in the MedScience industry. 

The GMIT Medical Science graduates have developed varied careers, some of whom work in Quality in the medical device and pharmaceutical sectors or as medical scientists in hospital laboratories, while others are completing post graduate studies in medical research. They all spoke about their careers to date, and gave advice to the students about developing a career in these and other fields. 

Dr Seamus Lennon, Head of Department of Life & Physical Sciences at GMIT, says it was a fantastic event for the students as well as for staff.

“Our BSc (Hons) in Medical Science programme is one of only three courses in the country which is accredited, such that graduates can work as Medical Scientists in hospital laboratories.”

“Many of our graduates take this option, while others develop very successful careers in industry.  A number of graduates have gone on to study medicine via the graduate entry scheme, while others complete post graduate studies in Medical Research.”

“All of them have started to carve out great careers for themselves in a range of areas. It was great to hear about their experience in the work place, and our current students really benefitted from listening to their success stories."
