GMIT Galway’s Open Morning on Saturday, 12 March, unveiled information about new CAO courses in Business, Design and Creative Arts, and a guest talk by education podcaster Donnchadh O’Mahony. It was the first in-person Open Morning in two years, running from 10am to 1pm, and focused on sharing information on all 100 GMIT CAO courses with parents, teachers, second level students and mature applicants.

At the event there will be talks on the various disciplines, advice for preparing for college, information stands representing each School and Campus, student support information stands, campus tours and giveaways. All GMIT Schools from five GMIT campuses will be represented with talks and stands at the event including:

  • School of Business
  • School of Engineering
  • School of Science & Computing
  • Galway International Hotel School
  • School of Design & Creative Arts (GMIT Cluain Mhuire Campus & GMIT Letterfrack Campus)
  • School of Health Science Wellbeing & Society (GMIT Mayo Campus)
  • GMIT Mountbellew Campus

Other stands include Student Services, Students Union, Admissions Office, Access & Disability (DARE), Access & Participation (HEAR), Careers Office. Attendees can talk directly with GMIT staff to find the latest up to date information on important topics like CAO Change of Mind, student supports, financial supports, scholarships, clubs and societies along with employment opportunities for graduates.

A talk "What happens next on my journey to 3rd Level" will be given by education podcaster Donnchadh O’Mahony of the very popular “Leaving Cert Guidance” Podcast. Donnchadh O Mahony says: “I can't wait to get onto the GMIT Galway campus in-person on 12th March for the Open Day.  I will be speaking with prospective students and parents about what happens next on their CAO journey.  I hope to see you all there.”

Dr Paddy Tobin, Head of the GMIT School of Design and Creative Arts, says: “We have two exciting new courses on CAO, commencing in September 2022. The new three-year BA (Hons) in Creative Media and Storytelling brings together technology and storytelling skills in a unique programme that will prepare graduates for careers in news, infotainment, entertainment, marketing, branding, education, and all kinds of content creation roles. The new three-year BA (Hons) in Animation and Game Design is an innovative redesign of a very popular pathway from our BA (Hons) Design programme. The Animation and Games industry is booming worldwide, and career opportunities in the West of Ireland are increasing rapidly. In addition, our highly successful BA & BA (Hons) in Design has been restructured as a common entry first year, with transfer to a choice of four new degree programmes in second year; namely, Product Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design and Illustration, Textile and Fashion Design.”

Lorraine Cunningham, GMIT Schools’ Liaison Officer, says: “We are so looking forward to hosting an on-site in-person event again. While the virtual open day events have been amazing, there is just so much excitement across campus for our five-campus Open Morning event to meet students and fellow staff from other campuses.  For so many students and families, they have missed out on the buzz of these events over the past two years so we really want to showcase all we have to offer.

We have a fabulous line up of talks and tours planned for prospective students and their parents to learn about the college, be better informed about CAO choices and experience student life. This will also be one of our last in-person events on the GMIT Galway Dublin road campus as from 1st April we will be part of Atlantic Technological University. It is really special for any prospective students to know that they will be graduating with a university degree but retaining the culture of GMIT, with its wide range of course offerings, small class sizes, real practical learnings and the great relationship with our staff.

If you are not able to attend, please don’t worry, you can catch up on recordings of previous open day virtual events hosted over the past year, available to view at openday.gmit.ie at your convenience.

Also, if you do want to meet in person at a later date, we are running campus tours on each of our five campuses every Friday for the month of March, email CampusTours@gmit.ie to make a booking.” adds Ms Cunningham.
