Undergraduate, postgraduate, technician and professional programmes on offer

An Open Information Evening on how to start a career in Accounting will take place in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Dublin Road campus (Café Foyer), on Thursday 29 November at 7pm.

Lecturing staff from the Business School will be available to discuss the undergraduate, postgraduate, technician and professional programmes on offer in the Institute. Information will be available from the professional accounting bodies and the different pathways to a career in accounting.

The core GMIT accounting offering is its Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Accounting, which continues to attract mature and standard CAO applicants eager to pursue a career in accounting. Those aspiring to study accounting on a part-time basis can pursue the Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) qualification in the evenings over two years, while those who have completed the ACCA Foundation Level can study ACCA professional level on a part-time basis. The Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting is designed for graduates of non-accounting degrees wishing to pursue employment opportunities in accounting.

GMIT is the only college in the west of Ireland offering the internationally recognised ACCA qualification on a full-time basis. The ACCA is recognised as the largest and fastest-growing global professional accountancy body with 586,000 students and members in 170 countries. ACCA Ireland has over 20,000 students and members. At the launch of the programme in GMIT, Aidan Clifford, ACCA’s Advisory Services Manager, said “GMIT is offering a fast track option for business degree graduates to obtain ACCA membership with one year of intensive study. The course positions graduates at the very top of the current employment opportunities and effectively recession proofs their careers.”

GMIT has provided accounting education since its foundation in 1973 and today has over 100 undergraduate and over 50 postgraduates studying Accounting. The School of Business has always maintained close links with the professional accounting bodies and keeps programmes up to date to maximise exemptions. The lecturing staff in the school are highly qualified professional accountants with considerable lecturing experience who understand the requirements of professional study. They are examiners, lecturers, markers and moderators for the professional accounting bodies.

Carmel Brennan, Head of Accounting & Information Systems, GMIT, says “There are always opportunities for jobs in accounting, even in these recessionary times. We offer a range of programmes suitable for those who have studied accounting previously and those who aspire to. As the CAO deadline draws nearer we are receiving queries in relation to our Bachelor of Business (Hons) on a daily basis. The open evening provides an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to visit the college and find out more about accounting as a career and the programmes GMIT offers.”

“GMIT also caters for graduates who wish to pursue accounting. The Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting is proving popular for graduates of non-business disciplines who are finding it difficult to get employment, wish to change direction or enhance their existing qualifications.”

“The postgraduate diploma allows graduates to gain numerous exemptions from Chartered Accounting Ireland (CAI) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in a short period of time.”
