School boys learn electronics from GMIT engineering students

A group of school boys from Galway city recently learned some new engineering skills after completing a short course in GMIT, delivered by GMIT Electronic & Electrical Engineering students as part of a six week Civic Engagement Module.

The boys learned how to make electrical games and found out what it is like to be a third-level student in GMIT. They were presented with a Certificate from the President of GMIT Michael Carmody at a reception in the college recently.

Organised in collaboration with the youth organisation Foróige, the boys attending weekly classes taught by a group of second year students who joined GMIT last year (Sept 2012), having entered second year of the popular Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Services and Automation.

Ray Weldon, lecturer and project supervisor, says it’s a great achievement for the young lads. “They found it genuinely interesting to come to a third-level campus like GMIT. Our own students and staff were very generous with their time and enjoyed imparting the skills and knowledge to the young lads.”

Adrian McGrath, Foroige Project Worker in the Meas Garda Youth Diversion Project, Westside, Galway, says: “It was a wonderful experience for the young people who took part. With the help and encouragement of the GMIT students the young people became aware of some of the skills that they themselves possess. It also allowed them to see the opportunities that are open to them, especially in the area of third-level education which they might not have been aware of.”

Foróige is the leading youth organisation in Ireland, working with approximately 64,000 young people aged 10 to 18 every year through volunteer-led clubs and staff-led youth projects. Foróige works with all young people through its general services and also works with vulnerable young people who require additional support through a full range of targeted services.

The Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Services and Automation at GMIT is a three-year, full-time level 7 degree programme focusing on five key areas: Electrical Power, electrical Services, electrical Automation, Energy Systems, and Business and Project Management Skills

Direct entry to second year is available to suitably qualified applicants such as electricians who apply directly to the Admissions Office, GMIT. The minimum year two direct entry requirements are that candidates have successfully completed Phase 6 of their Electrical Trades qualification or equivalent.
