GMIT launches unique initiative aimed at promoting Irish in all campuses

Seolfar tionscnamh fuinniúil san Institiúid inniu (Dé Máirt, an 3 Márta, 2015) a bhfuil sé mar aidhm aige úsáid na Gaeilge a chur chun cinn in GMIT. Déanfaidh an láithreoir teilifíse agus raidió, Eoghan Mac Diarmada an ócáid a sheoladh mar chuid d’imeachtaí Sheachtain na Gaeilge.

Coincheap de chuid Choiste Gaeilge GMIT é an Cappuccino Gaeltacht atá maoinithe ag Foras na Gaeilge. Láthair chruinnithe í sa cheaintín ag gach campas in GMIT, inar féidir le baill foirne agus neacha léinn a theacht le chéile agus Gaeilge a labhairt go neamhfhoirmiúil. Tabharfaidh aip atá forbartha ag mic léinn ríomhaireachta GMIT eolas faoin Cappuccino Gaeltacht agus faoi sheirbhísí in GMIT.

Bhí Méara na Gaillimhe, an comhairleoir Donal Lyons agus ionadaithe ó Fhoras na Gaeilge, Oifig an Choimisinéara Teanga, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Conradh na Gaeilge agus Comhlachas na Gaillimhe i láthair ag an seoladh, mar aon le hUachtarán na hInstitiúide, Michael Carmody, baill de Bhord Rialaithe GMIT agus mic léinn agus baill foirne GMIT.

Ghlac mic léinn GMIT páirt i gcomórtas talainne, ‘Réalt GMIT’ i gceaintín plódaithe tar éis an tsearmanais gheartha ribín i láthair nuabhrandáilte an ‘Cappuccino Gaeltacht’. Bhí láithreoir the Voice of Ireland agus Amy Kelly, Aontas na Mac léinn GMIT ina moltóirí ar an gcomórtas.

Ghlac cúig thaispeántas páirt sa chomórtas:  Eamon Rabitte (ar an veidhlín), mac léinn um eolaíochtaí bithchógaisíochta a sheinn ‘Hungarian Dance’ Brahms; The Strangers Band leis an amhránaí Barbara Hopkins, mac léinn um thacaíocht na teicneolaíochta faisnéise agus Sean Paul McMahon (ar an ngiotár), mac léinn um Oideachas Allamuigh, atá ag staidéar ag campas Mhaigh-Eo; Megan O’Donnell, mac léinn um Ealaíona Cócaireachta a chan leagan d’amhrán Adele, ‘Someone Like You’; John Flynn, mac léinn um bhitheolaíocht muirí a chan leagan de ‘Broken Road’ le Rascal Flatts agus Pamela Ashley Uba, mac léinn um Eolaíochtaí Míochaine a chan ‘Mustang Sally’ le Wilson Pickett. Bhí an bua ag Pameal Ashley Uba.

Léiríonn an Cappuccino Gaeltacht tiomántas GMIT i leith na Gaeilge mar atá leagtha amach sa Scéim Teanga 2013-16, a bhfuil sé mar aidhm ann cur le raon agus caighdeán na seirbhisí atá ar fáil trí Ghaeilge do mhic léinn, don fhoireann agus don phobal i gcoitinne.

Agus é ag caint ar choincheap an Cappuccino Gaeltacht ag GMIT, dúirt an t-aoi speisialta Eoghan Mac Diarmada; ’An rud is mó a thaitníonn liom faoin Cappuccino Gaeltacht ná go gcruthaíonn sé timpeallacht neamhfhoirmeálta réchúiseach a spreagann daoine le pé Gaeilge atá acu a úsáid. Measaim go bhfuil todhchaí na teanga ag brath ar dhaoine nach bhfuil líofa ar fad a bheith ar a gcompóird ag úsáid a gcuid Gaeilge ag gach léibhéal cumais agus déanfaidh tionscnaimh ar nós an ceann seo an meon seo a chothú’

Mhol Uachtarán na hInstitiúide, Michael Carmody an obair atá ar bun ag an gCoiste Gaeilge in GMIT: “Tá an Coiste Gaeilge an-ghníomhach ag cinntiú go ndéanfar Scéim Teanga na hInstitiúide a chur i bhfeidhm agus tá sé tiománta don Ghaeilge a chur cinn san Institiúid.”

“D’eascair an smaoineamh don Cappuccino Gaeltacht ó shuirbhé a rinne an Coiste i measc na foirne  ar bhealaí a bhféadfaí an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn níos fearr ar champas. Tá súil agam go spreagfaidh sé seo níos mó daoine le teacht agus comhrá Gaeilge a bheith acu thar chupán caife.”

GMIT LAUNCHES UNIQUE INITIATIVE AIMED AT PROMOTING IRISH IN ALL CAMPUSES

TV & Radio presenter Eoghan McDermott opens Cappuccino Gaeltacht and Reált GMIT

A unique initiative aimed at promoting the use of Irish in GMIT has been launched in the college today (Tuesday 3 March, 2015) by Irish television & radio presenter Eoghan McDermott and invited guests, as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Cappuccino Gaeltacht is a concept developed by GMIT’s Coiste Gaeilge and funded by Foras na Gaeilge. It provides a designated space in each GMIT campus canteen where staff and students can gather and chat informally as Gaeilge. An App, developed by GMIT computing students, offers Cappuccino Gaeltacht information and services in GMIT.

The launch was attended by the Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Donal Lyons, and members of Foras na Gaeilge, Oifig an Choimisinéara Teanga, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Conradh na Gaeilge, Galway Chamber, President  Michael Carmody and members of the GMIT Governing Body as well as GMIT students and staff.

After the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony in the newly branded Cappuccino Gaeltacht, GMIT students took to a podium in the packed canteen to compete in ‘Réalt GMIT’, a talent competition judged by the Voice of Ireland presenter and Amy Kelly, GMIT Students’ Union.

Five acts took part; Eamon Rabbitte (on violin), a Biopharmaceutical Science student who performed Brahms ‘Hungarian Dance’; The Strangers Band comprised of duo Barbara Hopkins (on vocals), an IT Support student, and Sean Paul McMahon (on guitar), an Outdoor Education student, both based in the Mayo campus; Megan O’Donnell, a Hotel Management student who sang a cover version of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’; John Flynn, a Marine Biology student who sang a cover version of ‘Broken Road’ by Rascal Flatts; and Pamela Ashley Uba, a Medical Science student who sang ‘Mustang Sally’ by Wilson Pickett.  Pamela was chosen as the winner by judges Eoghan McDermott and Amy Kelly.

Cappuccino Gaeltacht reflects the Institute’s commitment to the Irish language as outlined in the GMIT Irish Language Scheme 2013-2016, which aims to increase the range and standard of services available in Irish to students, staff and the general public.

Speaking about the GMIT Cappuccino Gaeltacht project, special guest Eoghan McDermott says: “The thing I love about Cappuccino Gaeltacht is that it creates a really informal and casual environment where people are encouraged to use whatever Irish they have. I truly believe the future of the language rests on non-fluent speakers feeling comfortable using their perfectly imperfect Irish out and about, and it’s ideas like this that will foster this spirit."

GMIT President Michael Carmody paid tribute to the GMIT Coiste Gaeilge. “The committee does important work in ensuring the implementation of the Scéim Teanga in GMIT and is keen to increase the use of Irish within the Institute.”

“The Coiste came up with the idea of Cappuccino Gaeltacht following a survey among staff as to how the use of Irish could be better promoted on campus. I hope that more and more people are encouraged to join in and have a chat as Gaeilge over a cup of coffee.”
