Surge in CAO applications for GMIT Physics and Film programmes

Initial indications from the Central Applications Office (CAO) show a significant increase in applications for degree programmes in Film & Television and Physics & Instrumentation in GMIT.

There has been a 50% increase in applications for the Bachelor of Arts in Film & Television (level 7) programme and a 30% increase for the Bachelor of Science in Physics & Instrumentation programme (level 7).

The CAO also shows high demand for Computing and Electronic Engineering, Agriculture, and Nursing & Health Sciences for 2012, similar to the 2011 trend. Disciplines where demand remains solid are also Energy Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programmes.

GMIT Registrar Michael Hannon says: “The Bachelor of Science in Physics & Instrumentation programme is one of the big surprises this year, showing a 30% increase in demand compared to last year. We are delighted with this development as we are one of a small number of Institutes of Technology offering this programme.”

“Another interesting development is a 50% increase in demand for the existing level 7 B.A. in Film and Television programme. Areas showing increased demand are also areas where graduates are still managing to gain employment, despite the downturn. This is very much in line with areas identified for growth in the economy. It indicates that the Leaving Cert class of 2012 are tuned into the national debate and are aware of the likely areas jobs will emerge in the future.” adds Mr Hannon.

GMIT has increased its number of honours degree programmes (level 8) on offer this year, in response to student demand. GMIT hopes to further increase the number of honours degree programmes in the coming years.
