Nursing Care of the Adult with Major Illness

Description

This module will provide general nursing students with knowledge, skills and attitudes in the holistic nursing management of adults with commonly encountered major illnesses across care settings. The module addresses the nursing priorities and management of adults with specific health related problems according to body systems in relation to the changing patterns of the disease and the approach to health care delivery. Theory is presented concurrent with the skills laboratory and includes intermediate assessment skills and more complex nursing procedures.

The module is delivered parallel with the module Biological Science for Nursing the Adult with Major illness.

To be successful in this module the student must pass each individual element.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Outline the holistic nursing care of the person with a major illness.

  2. Discuss the rationale for the theory underpinning safe nursing care.

  3. Accurately perform the clinical skills necessary for the nursing care of the person with a major illness and demonstrate the key nursing values of care, compassion, commitment (NMBI 2016, 2021) and kindness in so doing.

  4. Identify the stages of the nursing process and apply a problem-solving approach to care.

  5. Explore the approaches to nursing care used in different settings.

  6. Document nursing care in accordance with best practice and NMBI guidance.

  7. Discuss the role of the nurse in establishing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship with a patient.

  8. Explore the role of the nurse in contributing to the multidisciplinary team approach to care.

  9. Discuss the impact of major illness on the person.

  10. Describe the nursing care related to the preventative, acute and chronic components of the experience of major illness for the person.
