Older Person & Healthy Ageing

Description

This module is designed for students working in health or social care delivery. It undertakes a critical exploration of factors that contribute to the social construction of ageing in contemporary society. Using Healthy and Positive Ageing as the benchmarks to inform this, the student will be guided through relevant demographics and epidemiology, theories of ageing, national & international policy and wider societal factors identifying a number of challenges that the individual person may encounter as they age. The module will facilitate the student in identifying interventions and broader strategies to address these challenges for older people. In essence this module aims to contribute positively to the experience of ageing for those who access health or social care services.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically analyse theories of ageing and their relevance in wider society

  2. Critically discuss factors relevant to the experience of ageing for the individual

  3. With regard to national and international health policy, appraise their impact on meeting the needs of the older person.

  4. With reference to the experience of ageing by the individual, evaluate to what extent the cultures and delivery of healthcare responds to older people

  5. Critically discuss Healthy Ageing in the context of nursing and wider health and social care services
