Procedural Sedation
Description
This programme is relevant for acute hospital services and for contemporary nursing practice. Procedural Sedation and Analgesia (PSA) involves the use of hypnotic and/or analgesic medications to enable effective performance of diagnostic or therapeutic procedures effectively, whilst the patient is closely monitored for potential adverse effects.
The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the requisite knowledge to underpin professional development in the area of safe sedation practice. This includes theory and its application to practice.
Learning Outcomes
Identify the necessary principles underpinning safe sedation
Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to complete accurate physical assessment with regard to sedation techniques.
Demonstrate an understanding of the medication used in sedation including effects, side effects, synergism and safe medication management practices.
Identify areas of concern in procedural sedation
Effectively collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team in response to the patients condition and to successfully manage patients care.
Establish, through discursive knowledge, reflection and evidence-based practice, an appropriate level of competence and critical thinking ability in order to deliver safe care.
