Self Development and Interpersonal Skills

Description

The module aims to develop specific communication skills required for a career in nursing.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the basics needed to establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with the person in need of care in the context of the professional role of the nurse as well as the environment. The nursing values of care, compassion and kindness (NMBI 2016, 2021) will underpin this module. 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the nature of the therapeutic relationship.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic theory of communication to include verbal and non-verbal communication skills and processes.

  3. Discuss the role of the nurse and nursing values (NMBI 2016, 2021) within the therapeutic relationship and how these can be implemented effectively.

  4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people and healthcare professionals in an organisational context with respect to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland Code of Conduct and Ethics (2021)

  5. Recognise effective communication requires a sense of self-awareness and reflectivity on one’s own communication style and practice.
