Sociology Applied to Nursing and Healthcare

Description

This module seeks to develop undergraduate General and Mental Health Nursing students' knowledge and understanding of the sociological factors that need to inform nursing and healthcare delivery. It seeks to challenge the student to view the provision of care through a broader societal lens and to consider how UN sustainable development goals (2015) impact on the role of the Nurse. In doing so, it will encourage the student to explore opportunities for nursing and healthcare to evolve and address the sociological dynamics of our contemporary society.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of social inequality in shaping patterns of physical and mental wellbeing, health and resilience

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of a broad range of social determinants of health

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary social issues in healthcare

  4. Discuss the social context of health and healthcare and consider how the UN sustainable development goals can be applied in the healthcare setting. 

  5. Discuss social roles for Nursing within the context of broader healthcare and societal structures
