Sport and Exercise Physiology

Description

This module analyses and provides an understanding of the key physiological and metabolic responses to acute and chronic exercise. Students will investigate and evaluate the key changes that occur to the various physiological systems at rest and during a single bout of exercise as well as following a period of training.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of energy transfer during exercise.

  2. Describe the interdependence of the energy supply systems and the substrates used.

  3. Explain the key responses that occur to the various physiological systems during exercise including: pulmonary system, cardiovascular system, neuromuscular system and neuroendocrine system.

  4. Identify and explain various factors which influence the physiological responses to single and repeated bouts of exercise.

  5. Describe and explain the major physiological adaptations to acute and chronic exercise bouts.

  6. Describe the effect of exercise training on body composition.
