Who should apply for this course?
Applicants for this programme will be creative highly motivated people with a passion for design and making. People who love to solve problems and work with their hands with excel in this programme. A keen eye for detail and a desire for excellence characterise the students who commit to this course.
Entry Requirements
Entry to the Jewellery and Goldsmithing degree will be by direct entry through Atlantic Technological University.
After completing an application form, applicants are invited to an interview and asked to bring a portfolio/images of their work.
A panel consisting of the Course Coordinator, one other external interviewer and an ATU staff member will shortlist applicants based on this interview.
Successful applicants will be called for a bench test in late August In Thomastown.
12 - 16 students will be selected.
Examinations & Assessment
Assessment is a combination of continuous assessment and final exams.
Ongoing formative assessment is a major component of the Jewellery & Goldsmithing programme, informal progress reviews, one-to-one tutorials and group tutorials take place at regular intervals throughout modules.
Study Hours
This is a full-time immersive programme. It is designed and established in a workshop/studio environment simulating the real-world work experience. Students will be heavily engaged in course related activities on campus five days a week. This includes lectures, labs, seminars, workshop/studio practice, projects and assessments. In addition to the on-campus activities students will also engage in self-study activities as part of some of the course modules.
What will I learn?
On completing the course students will have developed:
- Thorough and in-depth knowledge of the theories, concepts, and principles (including historical, cultural, and contextual) associated with fine Jewellery and design interests.
- Appreciate the breadth of the discipline and develop an understanding beyond the boundaries of Jewellery, Gold and Silversmithing.
- Develop a critical approach and understanding of one's own professional practice and that relationship with stakeholders within a professional product and design crafts environment.
- Demonstrate mastery of the complex and specialised skills, tools, techniques, and processes of Gold and Silversmithing while fulfilling a design brief.
- Demonstrate an ability to produce work that is challenging within the contemporary field of Jewellery Design using Gemstones and precious metals through the application of specialised processes and methodologies and styles.
